Crescent Moon Series

by Savannah Stuart, Katie Reus

When she ran, she didn’t think he’d follow…

Pack princess Alyssa Clare was trying to come up with ways to get out of her arranged mating to alpha wolf Reece O’Shea—until she meets the powerful male. After getting to know him, mating doesn’t seem like such a bad idea anymore. But when he makes it clear she’s just a business arrangement for him and his pack, she calls off the mating and heads south to stay with a friend to lick her wounds in private.

But he’s not willing to let her go without a fight.

Reece can’t let Alyssa go, not when he’s completely fallen for the sweet, sexy female. He doesn’t care about the arranged mating deal, he just wants her and has no idea why she ran. To win her back he infiltrates another alpha’s territory, knowing it could mean his death. Luckily Grant Kincaid allows him in his domain—as long as Alyssa is okay with it. Convincing her that she’s all he wants is a bigger challenge than he imagined. But he’s not giving up, because he knows she’s the one he’s meant to be with forever.

Length: NOVELLA

I have not read anything in this series so I have nothing else to base this story on but what I have been given is great.  The characters are fully developed as is the story and I didn’t feel like any of it is incomplete or that it needs previous stories to get the full depth.

I really liked Alyssa and I understand why she ran.  New feelings have enough volatility so adding in a misunderstanding can easily throw things into a whirlwind.  And while that could be a tired, overused plot I think that here it works.  One of the reasons is that there is something very appealing about Reece as he tries to win her back.  Maybe it is the added paranormal parts that keep it going, although that could be easily overdone as well, but whatever it is I really enjoyed it.

Although the Were part is important, at the core it is a story of a man who is trying to win back the woman he loves.  It’s sweet and hot and fun.  And I’m definitely interested in seeing where else this world goes.

Book Review – When We Fall

Book Review, Marquita Valentine, Take the Fall series, When We Fall

cover74758-mediumWhen We Fall

A Take the Fall Novel

by Marquita Valentine

In the captivating new novel in Marquita Valentine’s Boys of the South spinoff series—perfect for readers of Abbi Glines and Katy Evans—a small-town sweetheart takes a chance on the bad boy who’s always been her hottest fantasy.

The last time Piper Ross saw her best friend’s sexy older brother, Jase Simmons, he was being taken away in handcuffs. Seven years later, two things haven’t changed: Piper is still head-over-heels in love with him . . . and Forrestville’s chief of police—Piper’s dad—still hates his guts. So when Piper sees a chance to get close to Jase, she makes her move—literally. As his new roommate, and as the office manager of his tattoo shop, Piper won’t be satisfied until Jase knows that she wants to be his.

The quintessential good girl, Piper is pure temptation for Jase. The only reason he’s always kept his distance is because she’s the last person he’d ever want to hurt. But once he realizes that Piper is ready to take the leap, everything just makes sense. Suddenly Jase feels like a new man—until nasty rumors start swirling and Piper’s heartless father stirs up even more trouble. Now Jase must convince Piper that she wasn’t wrong about him . . . because falling in love never felt so right.

When We Fall is steamy and fast.  I didn’t even realize how quick a read it actually was until I looked down at one point and was 2/3 of the way thru 🙂

I really liked Piper and Jase.  And I really appreciated that there wasn’t a lot of angst in their relationship.  Piper knew from the get go what she wanted and that was Jase.  She just had to convince him that he actually is the man that she knows him to be.  Jase drags his feet for a bit (and pulled a crap move or two that gave me sympathy pains for Piper) but once he realized they could be together nothing was going to keep them apart.  I love how easily they fit together and how much they supported each other.

I’m not sure what I missed from Take the Fall but I get the idea that at least part of their lead up might be there.  It wasn’t enough to make me confused but I love them so much that I am a little sad that I missed out on any of their romance.

Two people with not-so-great starts in life find that together they can be so much more, leading to a wonderful, feel-good read.

A Midnight Clear, Book Review, Hope Ramsay

cover77298-mediumA Midnight Clear

by Hope Ramsay

Dr. Tom Crawford isn’t feeling the spirit of the season when he arrives in Last Chance. Far from friends and family, he’s the odd man out in this town of gossiping, tight-knit Southerners-until he meets a sweetly sexy single mom who makes him feel welcome. Suddenly the handsome doctor is thinking he’s finally found a place to call home.

Local florist Teri Summers has her hands full of mistletoe in preparation for the holiday, yet finding someone to kiss is her last priority. But when the gorgeous new doctor makes a connection with her special needs son, Aiden, Teri finds herself wondering if she’s finally found happiness in this season of joy. For Teri and Tom, Last Chance may be their best chance at love . . .

Tom is so sweet and caring – I absolutely love his patience and understanding with Aiden and Teri.  He’s got some personal experience, which helps so much with dealing with Aiden’s Asperger’s Syndrome.  Poor Teri is a little overwhelmed and convinced that no one is going to take on everything that her life entails … lucky for her, Tom is made of stronger stuff.

I also really love that Ramsay gives us a peek into what goes on in Aiden’s head.  It adds so much to the story to be able to understand where he’s coming from and why he reacts the way he does.

A Midnight Clear is a fantastic, feel good holiday read.  It’s short, which makes it perfect for a little break from all the Christmas madness 🙂

Assignment: Romance Series, Barbara Valentin, KEY Change

I don’t know why the idea of this one appeals to me so much but I am really looking forward to getting my hands on it.  And I think that a little humor is what all of us need around this time of year 🙂

Assignment: Romance #3

Barbara Valentin

Romantic Comedy, 236 pgs

Gemma Halliday Publishing

Blurb:

The first thing Sara Cleff, a hard-edged, shower-singing rock music critic, wants to do after following a band on tour is crawl into her nice comfy bed in her well-appointed, optimally located vintage apartment. But before making it home, she learns her roommate-slash-boyfriend has apparently broken up with her while she was away on assignment and sublet their apartment out from underneath her. Ouch! When her key no longer fits in the lock, the last person she expects to find on the other side of the door is Andrew Benet, a wickedly gorgeous music director from a nearby church.

Something about the brash music critic strikes a chord with Andrew, and he offers her the chance to stay on one condition—she has to join the choir at his church. While Andrew may hold the lease on Sara’s apartment, does he have the key to unlock her heart?

Excerpt:

Up as usual at the crack of dawn, Andrew trudged to the bathroom, almost forgetting to close the door behind him before he spotted Sara’s bangles on the counter next to the sink. Reaching over, he shut the door and locked it.

Fifteen minutes later, he was showered, clean-shaven, and ready to go, except he didn’t have to be at the church until four-thirty that afternoon. Unplugging his phone from an outlet in his room, he brought it with him into the kitchen, transferred Sara’s clothes that she had washed the night before into the dryer and poured himself some coffee. He sat on a barstool, debated throwing a sweatshirt on over his plain, blue, short-sleeved T- shirt to ward off the chill, but started scrolling through his email instead.

His eyes, however, kept drifting over to Sara, out like a light on the sofa sleeper.

While most of her was wrapped in the blankets like a human burrito, with the sun starting to break through the bare branches of the ancient oak tree blocking the expansive bay window, he could see her face quite plainly.

Without all that the heavy dark makeup, he noted, she looked younger.

And kinda sweet, actually.

But then again, she wasn’t talking.

Still, he was glad he invited her to stay the night before.

But what about tonight? And tomorrow night? And the night after that?

While he mulled the possibilities, she rolled over and stretched, arching her back and groaning as she did. Resuming her curled-up burrito pose, she opened her eyes and mumbled, “How long have you been sitting there?”

Looking at his watch, he admitted, “About a minute. Or five. Maybe ten.” His cheeks suddenly felt a lot warmer.

With a loud yawn, she sat up. “I slept so good.” Patting the thin mattress with her hand, she added, “So comfy.”

The words hung in the air between them.

Sarcasm before coffee. Great.

Still, the sight of her in his pajama top seemed to lobotomize him. All he could do by way of a reply was nod.

With a shrug, she added, “Seriously, on a sleeper sofa—who knew?”

Snap out of it.

With no small amount of effort, he turned and glanced at the dryer. “Your clothes should be ready in about twenty minutes.”

At that, Sara took a deep breath and yanked the covers back, revealing two impossibly long bare legs as she flung her feet to the floor.

Knowing full well that the sudden blast of heat he felt was not delivered by way of the gilded vents along the floorboards, Andrew got up to check the thermostat on the wall next to the upright piano anyway, mumbling, “Gotta love old buildings.”

Guest Post – Mila Rossi

Mila Rossi, Wild Games

For those of you who are enjoying a cold holiday season, today we’ve got something set in a location a little warmer with a couple whose heated exchanges may be covering up heat of a different kind 🙂

And I’m so thrilled author Mila Rossi took a few minutes to stop by and give us a little peek into a few of her favorite things (about writing romances).

*****

One of the things I like most about writing romances is the chemistry buildup between the hero and the heroine. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the sex scenes too, but writing a sex scene can sometimes feel like providing a step-by-step guide, because you have to be precise with your visuals. Who put what where and how. I used to be a technical writer, so I know what it’s like to write an instruction manual. It can be difficult and not always inspiring, despite the subject matter.

The warm-up to that though, can be very creative. How does the couple meet? Do they like each other, hate each other, or have they always been secretly in love?

I have a fondness for enemies who become lovers. Their strong personalities and heated arguments are fun to write, and I think of it as a clash of the titans. For example, in my latest contemporary romance novella, WILD GAMES, a feisty botanist has to share a tree house with the man in charge of security during her research expedition. I had a great time writing about Becca and Matt’s bickering which only seemed to increase the sexual tension. Of course not every couple is going to argue, but that doesn’t matter. A developing attraction can be evident in small gestures, witty repartee or harmless physical contact, such as a handshake.

What story do you think has great buildup to the couple finally getting together? Do you prefer a short or long getting-to-know-the-real-you period, as I like to think of it?

Blurb:

Despite warnings of annoying mosquitos and beastly spiders, Becca Glover couldn’t be more excited about her expedition to Costa Rica. Rooming with Matt Ritter, however, is an inconvenience she doesn’t see coming. He wields a machete, shaves with a knife and needs to wear a decent amount of clothes to cover the muscles she can’t stop staring at.

Hired to lead a group of scientists through the jungle, Matt is convinced the fiery redhead is intent on making his job harder than it needs to be. Rebecca doesn’t listen and seems to invite danger at every turn. Her attitude is as much of a distraction as her curves and emerald green eyes. Now if he could only pay as much attention to his job as he does to her, their one-month adventure would fly by without a hitch.

Hot temperatures, wild animals and a shared tree house are just the beginning of Becca and Matt’s obstacles. The real challenge lies in surviving each other.

Excerpt:

She couldn’t help from looking at his naked torso standing before her. Oh, for heaven’s sake! Why did she give him the satisfaction of looking?

“There is nothing to talk about,” she said once their eyes locked again. “Just keep your shirt on please.”

“Why?” he wanted to know.

Why? What the heck was she supposed to say? “Because it’s not decent.”

He barked with laughter. “I don’t give a rat’s ass about decency.”

“That much is obvious,” she said dryly. “But since you’re living with me, a woman, you might want to give decency a shot.”

“You’re not the first woman I shared a room with,” he started to say.

“Well, that’s not a surprise,” she mumbled. “And we’re not sharing a room, we’re sharing a house.”

“Whatever. The others didn’t have problems with my decency.”

Oh brother. This conversation was going nowhere.

“Well, I do. I need you to put your clothes on, keep them on and stay out of my way. Every time I try to focus, you’re distracting me and it’s getting annoying.”

His eyebrows shot up. “I’m pissing you off?”

“Yes,” she shot back before she could bite her tongue.

“Guess what? The feeling is mutual. You’ve been nothing but trouble since we got here.”

He was only a couple of feet away from her, but she didn’t care about the nearness. Now she was starting to get annoyed.

“I don’t see what I have done to make your job harder,” she said.

He let out a fake laugh. “It’s no smooth sailing keeping an eye on you, believe me.”

“As I’ve told you before, Mr. Ritter, you don’t need to keep an eye on me. I’m perfectly fine keeping an eye on myself.”

The nerve of that man to say she was difficult. Besides twisting her ankle, she had done nothing else to be an inconvenience to anyone. He, on the other hand, seemed to get some perverse pleasure out of torturing her.

“Whatever you say, sweet cheeks.”

“Stop calling me that!” The nicknames alone drove her crazy.

“Listen, lady. We are stuck together in this jungle and this hut, whether you like it or not,“ he said, taking a step forward. She resisted the urge to step back and insinuate that she was intimidated. She wasn’t. She just didn’t want to stare into his now angry eyes.

“You’re welcome to go sleep out there with the jungle cats,” he continued, “but I doubt you’ll wanna do that. So do us both a favor and calm down. You’re much safer with me here than out on your own. I’m not gonna bite and I keep my hands to myself.” He held up his hands as if to prove that they weren’t doing anything mischievous behind his back.

“Now, are you going to act like a normal person and give me some peace, or do I have to throw you over my shoulder and lock you in your room?” At this point, he was right up in her face.

At the mention of being thrown over his shoulder, she flinched and took a step back. “I thought you’d keep your hands to yourself.“

“I will as long as you don’t provoke me.”

She gulped. She’d definitely not provoke him.

“Are you calm now?” he asked, still much too close. His hazel eyes looked broodingly at her and his skin glistened with perspiration. Damn her for finding that arousing.

“Well?” he asked, raising his eyebrows.

She stared at his mouth, surrounded by the stubble along his jawline. Whatever he’d asked her slipped her mind.

“Are you calm?” he repeated, his voice quieter and raspier than before. His gaze covered every inch of her face and she could only imagine what she looked like from the blasted heat.

“I’m calm,” she responded in a mere whisper. Her heart wasn’t. It was pumping a million times a minute.

He leaned forward. “Good.”

She held her breath, sure that even he could hear her pulse racing. Her chin tilted up and she moistened her lips in anticipation, but he stepped around her and walked away.

She stood like an idiot rooted to the spot. Her breath came out in one long whoosh, like a deflated balloon.

Book Review, Love on a Summer Night, Pine Harbour series, Zoe York

We’ve seen book 2 before – Love in a Snow Storm – and I’m super excited to see another story.  And just like that one, this one can easily stand on its own so don’t worry if you are new to the series.

*****

LoveOnaSummerNightDec2014Love on a Summer Night

Pine Harbour #4

by Zoe York

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release: November 24, 2015

Blurb:

Never say never. Especially not to a determined bad boy.

Zander Minelli is exactly the wrong kind of man. He’s dark, dangerous, and knows far too much about sawed-off shotguns.

Faith Davidson finds him irresistible. The widowed single mother knows she should dip her toe back in the dating pool with someone solid and dependable. Definitely no tattoos. But every time she looks up, the brooding soldier is watching her, and she can’t help but wonder what it would be like to let herself have a taste…

Small town summer nights have never been hotter—and one transplanted city-girl’s heart has never been more fragile.

STANDALONE FACTOR: This book is the fourth story in the Pine Harbour series, but can be read as a single title romance. The main characters were introduced in the previous books. No cliffhanger.

Excerpt:

He settled between her legs, not grinding—just there. Hard and ready. More teasing.

She was going to explode from the delayed gratification. Lifting her hips, she took on the task of remedying that herself.

At the first roll of her hips, Zander paused his worship of her breasts. At the second, he redoubled his efforts, helping her get right to the brink—then he reared up and reached for the waistband of her jeans.

Oh no.

She wanted to be naked with Zander more than anything else in the world.

But even under the cover of darkness, she realized she wasn’t quite ready for Zander to see her naked.

She grabbed at his wrists and tried to pull him back down on top of her. Maybe they could just dry hump. That had been hotter than it sounded. It had been hotter than her fantasies, and she was a writer with a pretty expansive vocabulary and a deep understanding of the dirty side of the Internet.

He wouldn’t be deterred. His fingers slid beneath her waistband, making her soft tummy quiver, and not in a good way. Okay, mostly a good way with just an edge of fear. But she still pushed at his hands.

He gave her an amused look. “Stop batting my hands away. I want to feel it when you come.”

She sighed, suddenly nervous, and he gave her another look, this time one of dawning awareness. She tipped her head back. The stars were so bright tonight. “I’ve got battle scars,” she whispered. “Stretch marks and a c-section incision that didn’t heal properly. You’ve only seen the good bits.”

Zander settled back on the blanket beside her and nuzzled into her neck. “Seriously? You don’t think I’ve got scars? Let’s go toe to toe.”

“Yours are different.” He was beautiful. All sculpted muscle and delicious shadows. “New plan. I’m going to touch you.”

“Be my guest.” His voice was low and rough, like a tumble of falling rocks. Danger, her heart thumped. He rolled away from her and pulled off his t-shirt, baring the tattoos that had caused her so much anxiety just a few days earlier. The flickering light from the fire caught the edge of a raised scar on his rib cage, and she sucked in a breath as she reached out and traced the knotted tissue that looked suspiciously like a slash in his skin.

“What happened?” she asked in a quick rush, then shook her head. “No. I don’t think I want to know.”

“You don’t. But it’s okay, I’m alive and here. That’s all that matters.”

Review:

Just like with Love in a Snow Storm, it’s the characters that make this book so great.  York does a fabulous job with their motivation, history, and interactions – letting us get to know them as they get to know each other, being there with them as they fall in love and watching them have ups & downs.  I love how real her characters and their issues feel.

Zander is absolutely fantastic, with an amazing amount of patience and understanding, but also a fun sense of humor – I absolutely love him from their first meeting.  He’s always there to support Faith & Eric and he totally keeps his head each time that Faith gets scared, probably from that crazy Minelli family of his as well as his military training.  Faith is having a little bit of a tough transition (York does such a great job of making sure we understand why), so she does a lot of dancing around her relationship with Zander.  But he’s such a sweet-heart in a bad boy’s body that she has no hope of resisting 🙂

I think these everyday romances – where you feel like the people are friends and that their problems could be anyone’s problems – are my favorites.  They are just so … well, real.  And York is good at delivering on that with great characters that you can relate to, a good deal of humor to have you smiling and just that right amount of heat to make it spicy!

Book Review, Cathryn Fox, His Best Friend's Girl, In the Line of Duty series

cover74063-mediumHis Best Friend’s Girl

In the Line of Duty, Book 5

by Cathryn Fox

With a little help—and a little kink—from her friend, she might just get her man.

Skylar Redmond’s Sky Bar is regularly wall-to-wall hot soldiers. Yet she is alone—and getting tired of it. Forget about finding a man who’ll rock her world in the bedroom. She’ll settle for a guy who’s stable, kind and compassionate. Too bad that guy still sees her as the pigtailed girl from their youth, not the strong woman she is today. But maybe, with a little help, that’ll change.

As an ex-military field ambulance technician, Matt James excels at performing under pressure. Pretending to be interested in Skylar to help her capture the attention of his best friend? Piece of cake—because he won’t be faking it. He’s been in love with her since their school yard days, but never pushed it. She deserves someone who can offer her more.

A touch leads to a kiss, and a kiss to a night that throws a kink—or three—into Sky’s plan. Leaving her wondering if she’s going for the wrong man…and letting the right one slip through her fingers.

Warning: This book contains a girl with her eyes on the wrong prize, and a half-cocked plan—but definitely not a half-cocked hero.

This series is one of my absolute favorites.  As soon as I see that there is a new book I pick it up without even looking at the blurb – don’t care, I know it will be good 🙂  And Fox doesn’t let me down with her latest.

Matt has to be one of my favorite heroes.  He’s smart, caring, sensitive, hard-working, a good friend … and has been silently in love with one of his best friends forever.  Unfortunately he also has a little inferiority complex – thinks that he’s not good enough for her until he becomes a doctor – so he’s willing to help her catch the attention of their other best friend instead.  Even if it breaks his heart.

I like Sky as well.  Too often with this kind of book, she would have been so oblivious to Matt and his appeal that it would be painful – concentrating instead on the one she thinks she wants.  Here though it’s a more fluid process as she starts to see her old friend as more, but of course miscommunication and assumptions make for complications.  She has some help from her friends but it is very hard to take that step to something more with Matt and potentially ruin a friendship that means so much to both of them.

There is always a warning with the In the Line of Duty series because they are fabulously spicy.  Matt has a little kink to him which adds a little steam to a beautifully romantic and touching story – nothing to be too concerned about as long, though,  as you like your romances hot 🙂

I’m super excited to welcome Beth Rhodes to visit today.  We’ve actually seen her before – I really enjoyed Letters From Home  and I can’t wait to get a chance to read the next book!  But for now I’ll let her share a little about how she came to love series … and then I’ll share how much I love Outside the Lines sometime soon (because I’m sure I will if it is anything like the first book 🙂 ).

*****

Is your Romance a Series?

I’m a sucker for series. Let’s face it, from day one of my romance reader lifestyle [yes, it’s a lifestyle…although there is some debate on whether it’s a chosen one or if we’re born this way], I’ve been in love with books that are connected.

NBBMFirst ever romance? Nobody’s Baby But Mine by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. Book 3 of the Chicago Stars Series. I was hooked! From there I went to the high intensity series by Suzanne Brockmann, Troubleshooters. I ate those up, too. Nora Roberts, Elizabeth Lowell…and on to Kaylea Cross and so many more. As a matter of fact, I need a new series. Something to get my blood pumping in the New Year. Jump in on the blog, if you can, and leave me a comment about where I should go next. Kay?

LFHSuffice it to say, my books are usually connected. Every book I’ve written has a book two, sometimes just waiting to be written. The one thing I’ve tried to do is mix things up. My books are contemporary. That’s their common theme. Book One of my Love Beyond Reason Series—Letters From Home—is a military romance. Despite knowing that holding the theme would appeal to readers, I found Book Two—Outside The Lines—didn’t have military in it.

And in real life—in a family, especially—what are the odds that every brother would be a soldier and every sister would marry a soldier or be a soldier? It’s rare. So, I broke the rules. I went with my gut, and Maria got her own story. Will I go back to the military theme? You betcha!! I’m already writing Book Three, and it’s military…and even a little suspensey [‘nother rule broken]. I guess I’m a rule breaker at heart. But one with love as the ultimate goal…

Before I go, I have to thank Julie for having me on her blog. She features some of my favorite authors…like Erica Ridley! And I’m honored that she asked me to visit and share my new release with you.

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas. May your New Year be filled with peace and love.

His fling with the pretty Hispanic woman from California is as close to feeling as he wants to get. Now, he’s back home, burying himself in work and trying to forget.

Shortly after he leaves, Maria finds out she’s pregnant. Her first leap into freedom results in a life-changing consequence. She knows she has to find him. But what she finds is not what she expects. Excerpt:

David stopped short in the doorway.

Maria and Mrs. Kraus danced across the hardwood floor in front of him. Maria’s dress revealed well-toned calves with each turn. Her feet moved quick and sure under her, and the older woman’s barely kept up. The ache in his neck eased when he laughed. “Not bad, Mrs. Kraus.”

“It’s the salsa,” she answered as the two women did a little turn. Maria’s hips—holy mother, don’t even think about sex right now—moved to the rhythm and then her shoulders dipped and shook as she lead Mrs. Kraus into another twirly turny thing.

He rubbed a hand at the back of his neck with a smile.

Sex. Sex. Sex.

Stop thinking about sex!

“You try it!” Mrs. Kraus let go of Maria who did another twirl and landed in his arms.

“I’m not much of a dancer.”

Maria kissed him lightly, laughing. “Everyone can dance,” she said, taking both his hands and moving him over the floor.

He watched her feet, which happened to be bare. Toes painted a dark red.

Sex. Sex. Sex.

I’m not thinking about sex.

Liar. He lifted his gaze to her face, her pretty brown eyes, and found her grinning at him and wagging those eye brows. Like she knew what he was thinking—the little devil.

Excerpt:

He let his gaze wander the ballroom of the Westin St. Francis in downtown San Francisco. With its lavish holiday decorations, it could have been any company party. But the huge photo banners hanging from the ceiling made this one unique.

Every black-and-white image showed a different view of Riley O’Brien & Co.’s signature blue jeans. He was pretty sure the jean-clad ass in the photos was his own.

He chuckled wryly. The banners proved what he’d always known: he was nothing but a giant ass. He had no doubt Teagan would wholeheartedly agree with that assessment.

Teagan’s date touched a curl that had fallen to her shoulder, and Nick growled under his breath when the fucker stroked the smooth skin of her upper chest. He would rather take a direct hit from a 350-pound linebacker than watch that loser put his hands on her. Hell, he’d rather be buried under the entire defensive line than suffer the torture of watching another man paw the woman he wanted for himself.

Moving his gaze from her body, he focused on her face. Her full lips were painted a deep scarlet that matched her dress, and he took a moment to remember the taste of her mouth, addictive in its sweetness.

Her wavy dark hair was pulled into an elaborate updo, emphasizing her graceful neck and smooth shoulders, which were bared by her strapless dress. Years ago, he’d had his mouth on that supple skin before he had trailed his tongue down into her creamy cleavage.

“Priest.”

Jerking his head toward the voice, he was surprised to find Quinn standing next to him. Nick mustered a smile for his old friend, clasping the hand he offered and slapping him on the back.

“It’s good to see you,” Quinn said. “I’m glad you could make it.”

Nick hadn’t been sure if he would be able to attend the party. His schedule had depended on whether his team made the playoffs. But they’d lost their last three games, dashing those hopes.

Although it didn’t reflect well on him, he hadn’t cared much that his team wasn’t heading to the playoffs. He was ready to move on, and although he had yet to announce it publically, he’d decided to retire. He had given enough of his life to the game, and it had given him what he had needed in return. Now he needed something else.

He needed Teagan.

*****

Review:

I really enjoyed this story and I think my favorite part is the relationship that grows between the two as they become friends & then more.  It creates such a connection between them – one that even manages to survive how absolutely, terribly Nick screws up.  It makes for an absolutely and adorably sweet end that just made me grin.

I can totally understand why some are upset by how Nick treats women (before getting romantically involved with Teagan) and then her when he’s trying to win her back.  He has his reason for being a little loose with his female companionship and it isn’t like he promised them anything more.  And he does realize that he’s not doing right by Teagan and works to fix it.  When it comes down to it, Nick has some growing to do and he does it.

There are also complaints about Nick’s communication issues, which I just don’t get.  It is such a HUGE part of this story and one of the main problems between the two.  I think Sutton does a fantastic job of setting it up and explaining the whys behind it.  They’ve got other troubles as well, including Nick’s relationship with his father which also play into his relationship with Teagan.  I totally got him every step of the way and rooted for him right up to the HEA.

I should warn you that there’s just a smidge of Book 1 that bleeds over into this one that … well, it didn’t impact this story but it definitely made me go “I’m missing something”.  Which of course, me being me, made me anxious to go out and get it to find out what that is 🙂

Book Review, Cleo Peitsche, Melted and Whipped

This is quite the steamy read … hot enough to melt polar ice caps 🙂

melted and whippedMelted and Whipped

by Cleo Peitsche

Genre: BDSM, Contemporary, Erotic Romance

Publisher: ARe Books

Date of Publication: December 1, 2015

ISBN: 978-1-943576-47-0

Word Count: 28,000

Cover Artist: Erin Dameron-Hill

Blurb:

She’ll need more than a safe word to survive Porter Loughton.

Too broke to fly home for the holidays, ski instructor Emily is stuck on the slopes, giving lessons to the rich and the privileged. She doesn’t expect to see Porter Loughton, a former friend who broke her heart in college, ten years later and half a continent away. The mesmerizing billionaire suggests dinner, and Emily soon discovers how it feels to be bent across his knee, to be dominated by him. Their chemistry is hotter than in her dirtiest fantasies.

Emily knows it would be foolish to let him get too close after what happened before. She’s broke, her career nonexistent. The last thing she needs is to be in love with a man who doesn’t feel the same way. But when she receives distressing news, Porter is there to soothe her, and he won’t leave her side. Soon she has no control over her feelings.

Excerpt:

I’m so stunned that I don’t even realize what’s happening at first, but then Porter’s tongue traces the closed seam of my mouth.

My lips soften, opening to him.

In response, his large palms cup my face even tighter, and his body rocks a little, inching closer.

A moan of longing rises in my throat. Embarrassed, I try to pull away.

Porter releases me. “Are you okay?”

All I can do is nod.

“Good.” He steps in close. His warm breath caresses my lips. “Because I’ve been thinking about doing this ever since…” He shakes his head and the next thing I know, his tongue is sliding over mine.

He tastes like the wine. Strong. Powerful. I’ll never be able to drink red wine again without remembering this, without getting turned on.

Because I am turned on. Pulsing heat throbs in my core, and I feel my pussy getting slick with desire.

I’m about to reach for him, to finally feel his perfect body under my fingertips, when he breaks our kiss.

Eyes closed like he’s savoring the moment, he continues to hold my face, then brushes his lips over mine, which are throbbing like the rest of my body. They feel swollen, lightly bruised.

“I think dinner is ready.” His voice is husky and raw.

Dinner is the last thing on my mind, but I think it would be rude to suggest we skip it in favor of doing more of the kissing thing.

When he releases me and turns his attention to the pan on the stove, I flee to my glass of wine. I don’t bother with the polite dance of asking if I can have more; it’s not like he’s going to say no.

I fill my glass and take a long swallow. Heaven help me—the wine tastes like his kiss.

“Can you carry these?” He slides two plates, two red cloth napkins, and two sets of silverware onto the counter. “It’ll save me a trip. This way.”

I follow him out the open side of the kitchen, toward the window. We enter a dining room with a table long enough to comfortably seat the entire U.S. Olympic alpine ski team.

A fancy centerpiece of candlesticks surrounded by holly adorns the end closest to us. Porter lays down two red cloth placemats and a trivet, on which he places a glass bowl of stir-fry.

I begin to distribute the place settings while Porter returns to the kitchen. He makes about six trips in all, and even though he tells me to sit, I hover uncomfortably to the side, my mind still buzzing from that kiss. Why did he do it?

The answer seems obvious: because he wanted to.

He’s not the same as he was in college. He’s even more self-assured, which I hadn’t thought was possible. It makes me unsure of myself, like there’s a predetermined amount of confidence that can exist between two people, and Porter has taken it all.

I learned a lot about men through my twenties, and while a big part of me only wants to know what Porter is like in bed, another part of me already knows I’ll be disappointed with just a one-night fling.

After all these years, it’s possible that the fantasy is better than the reality could ever be. I never thought of it in these terms before, but Porter is the perfect man in my memory, an unattainable ideal that no one could possibly live up to. What if he’s bad in bed? What if he’s a selfish lover?

Worse, what if he’s amazing, but then he disappears? He’s successful, rich, powerful. It’s insane to think his interest in me is anything more but casual. Really, with so many tourists in town with their families, and so many of the transplanted locals out of town, it’s not like there’s much choice for a man looking for fun between the sheets.

The wine isn’t helping me sort through my jumbled thoughts. As soon as I reassure myself on one front, the assault starts again from another angle.

If only this weren’t Porter, but some other gorgeous millionaire. No, billionaire. He was already a multimillionaire before college, thanks to the family fortune.

I snort. There aren’t many gorgeous billionaires to be found, and why can’t I enjoy the evening? I wish I weren’t buzzed.

*****

Review:

At around 100 pages, Melted and Whipped is a fast and very sexy read.  It’s a good mix of the history between Emily & Porter and them getting to know each other again, while defining of what being together now would mean.

Peitsche does a fantastic job of explaining the whys of a BDSM relationship with Porter and how he shows Emily exactly what that would look like if she decides to get involved with him.  But it isn’t all about the bedroom.  When the going gets tough for Emily, Porter is there to support her and it shows what a caring man he is.  Sexy with a heart – you can’t beat that!

I found this to be a truly delightful second-chance-at-love story, packaged with a whole lotta heat.  It’s a quick read but Peitsche still does a fantastic job of giving a complete and satisfying story … and one that will have you turning up the A/C in winter 🙂

Author Info:

If Cleo Peitsche isn’t writing (or reading) erotica, she’s probably sitting on her balcony, watching the wind blow through the trees. She loves horses, snowstorms, and piña coladas. If she won the lottery, she would hire an assistant to take care of the technical side of e-publishing so that she could write all day.

Some random facts about Cleo: 1. Thinks life’s too short to forgo HEAs and HFNs; 2. Sprained an ankle joining the mile-high club. (Never again!); 3. Favorite writers include Cormac McCarthy, Junot Diaz, and Rachel Caine.; 4. Gets weak-kneed for bookish guys who know how to fix things with their hands. *swoons*
