Love Beyond Reason #2

by Beth Rhodes

For the first time in her life, good-girl Maria Rodriguez throws aside caution for an all-consuming desire. She wants freedom from rules and her family looking over her shoulder. She wants the love she’s only ever dreamed of. But then that love walks away. Jaded bachelor David March doesn’t believe in love. His fling with the pretty Hispanic woman from California is as close to feeling as he wants to get. Now, he’s back home, burying himself in work and trying to forget.

Shortly after he leaves, Maria finds out she’s pregnant. Her first leap into freedom results in a life-changing consequence. She knows she has to find him. But what she finds is not what she expects. David is not the down-to-earth man he portrayed. And the love she remembers has been replaced by cold calculation and contracts. He lied to her once. Can she trust that a marriage agreement will bring back the love they once shared?

David has not had the most nurturing upbringing – his dad is pretty intense and has more than his fair share of pride.  He seems like a pretty ruthless man and has been David’s main family since he was 9 & his mom left.  David blames her for abandoning him and he’s put up some thick walls when it comes to romance.

Meeting Maria throws him for a bit of a loop, especially when he starts falling for her.  Of course, he handles that very poorly but fate has another twist in store for him 🙂   While David continues to try to keep things unemotional, it’s very hard to resist Maria’s love of life … and having her in his life every day, shaking things up, isn’t helping.  She’s nothing like he’s used to but that has to be the best thing for him because that man needs some major softness in his life.

I will say I was just a tiny bit confused over how much emphasis Maria put on gaining her independence and not being babied, instead wanting to be needed.  I’m not sure if I just didn’t get it or if maybe it needed a little more something.  She’s got her own career and has been saving money, which seems pretty adult for a mid-20s person … and maybe that’s it.  I get the idea she still lives at home and her parents are pretty conservative, so perhaps it is just a little quarterlife crisis going on – she’s looking for something all her own, separate from her big, boisterous family.  Otherwise, though, I just loved her.  And she is just what David needs – they are so darn cute together!!

Just like Letters From Home, Rhodes again delivers a romance full of warmth and humor.  And I love that we have more siblings out there just waiting to meet their match!

(It’s been a while since I ready the first book in this series, but it didn’t really matter and I’m pretty sure it won’t matter if you haven’t gotten to it yet.)

Beth Rhodes, Letters From Home, Love Beyond Reason series, Outside the Lines

I’m super excited to welcome Beth Rhodes to visit today.  We’ve actually seen her before – I really enjoyed Letters From Home  and I can’t wait to get a chance to read the next book!  But for now I’ll let her share a little about how she came to love series … and then I’ll share how much I love Outside the Lines sometime soon (because I’m sure I will if it is anything like the first book 🙂 ).

Is your Romance a Series?

I’m a sucker for series. Let’s face it, from day one of my romance reader lifestyle [yes, it’s a lifestyle…although there is some debate on whether it’s a chosen one or if we’re born this way], I’ve been in love with books that are connected.

NBBMFirst ever romance? Nobody’s Baby But Mine by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. Book 3 of the Chicago Stars Series. I was hooked! From there I went to the high intensity series by Suzanne Brockmann, Troubleshooters. I ate those up, too. Nora Roberts, Elizabeth Lowell…and on to Kaylea Cross and so many more. As a matter of fact, I need a new series. Something to get my blood pumping in the New Year. Jump in on the blog, if you can, and leave me a comment about where I should go next. Kay?

LFHSuffice it to say, my books are usually connected. Every book I’ve written has a book two, sometimes just waiting to be written. The one thing I’ve tried to do is mix things up. My books are contemporary. That’s their common theme. Book One of my Love Beyond Reason Series—Letters From Home—is a military romance. Despite knowing that holding the theme would appeal to readers, I found Book Two—Outside The Lines—didn’t have military in it.

And in real life—in a family, especially—what are the odds that every brother would be a soldier and every sister would marry a soldier or be a soldier? It’s rare. So, I broke the rules. I went with my gut, and Maria got her own story. Will I go back to the military theme? You betcha!! I’m already writing Book Three, and it’s military…and even a little suspensey [‘nother rule broken]. I guess I’m a rule breaker at heart. But one with love as the ultimate goal…

Before I go, I have to thank Julie for having me on her blog. She features some of my favorite authors…like Erica Ridley! And I’m honored that she asked me to visit and share my new release with you.

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas. May your New Year be filled with peace and love.

Excerpt:

David stopped short in the doorway.

Maria and Mrs. Kraus danced across the hardwood floor in front of him. Maria’s dress revealed well-toned calves with each turn. Her feet moved quick and sure under her, and the older woman’s barely kept up. The ache in his neck eased when he laughed. “Not bad, Mrs. Kraus.”

“It’s the salsa,” she answered as the two women did a little turn. Maria’s hips—holy mother, don’t even think about sex right now—moved to the rhythm and then her shoulders dipped and shook as she lead Mrs. Kraus into another twirly turny thing.

He rubbed a hand at the back of his neck with a smile.

Sex. Sex. Sex.

Stop thinking about sex!

“You try it!” Mrs. Kraus let go of Maria who did another twirl and landed in his arms.

“I’m not much of a dancer.”

Maria kissed him lightly, laughing. “Everyone can dance,” she said, taking both his hands and moving him over the floor.

He watched her feet, which happened to be bare. Toes painted a dark red.

Sex. Sex. Sex.

I’m not thinking about sex.

Liar. He lifted his gaze to her face, her pretty brown eyes, and found her grinning at him and wagging those eye brows. Like she knew what he was thinking—the little devil.
